The Akademik Shokalskiy sister ship to the Polar Pioneer, is an ex Russian ice-breaker which was chartered for several years by the Christchurch based company Heritage Expeditions. The vessel was built in 1983 and refurbished in Lyttelton in 1998 to bring it up to western accomodation standards.
The Russian captain and crew are among the most experienced navigators in the world and their enthusiasm for exploration is legendary.
Akademik Shokalskiy accommodates 46 passengers in triple, twin, superior cabins, and suite. All cabins have a window, writing desk and an ample storage space.
Accommodation is simple yet comfortable and the meals, prepared by European chefs and served by Russian stewardesses, are wholesome and uncomplicated.
